What are Maiden's Circles?
I have a passion for providing space, education and opportunities to explore rites of passage, and believe the journey through puberty and adolescence to be a particularly important and transformative time for our girls. Through sharing stories, providing information and the opportunity to reflect with peers, circle offers an experience quite unlike other educational offerings.
Circles are an excellent way to facilitate and foster group cohesiveness as a whole, but also provide an opportunity for the girls participating to have an 'aunty' style relationship develop where they feel safe to explore and ask questions, discuss issues or problems that may arise and develop problem solving around topics that are more challenging. The beauty of circle is that all these things can be done in a non threatening way, where the girls can feel free and open to express themselves in a held and safe environment.
Maiden's circles generally run monthly and involve a focus/theme each month - with topics such as friendship, trust, school etc to begin with and gradually move into more age appropriate health topics such as puberty/adolescence as they get older. I'm currently running circles for girls aged from 9 up to 14 years old, however the circles can be facilitated for any aged group of maidens.
I provide a combination of gentle ceremony, space for sharing, some movement exploration around the theme (using my recent Dance movement training), creative art processes (such as art/clay/craft) and time/space for reflection.
To begin a circle in your area, I require a minimum of six girls and can accommodate up to 10-12 per group. Maiden's circles run for 1 1/2 hrs and are $25 per maiden/per session. If money is tricky, I would encourage conversation rather than absence, as I'm always open to barter/trade etc. Perhaps you have delicious food growing in your garden that you could share. I don't want money to exclude anyone.
Please note that I am based in Eltham, Victoria.
